Time is being spent creating and developing sustainable programmes which can be applied across the geographically diverse county of Cumbria.
We are very proud of our ‘Bright Sparks’ programme which has been developed in conjunction with United Utilities. To date the programme has been delivered to over 10,000 Key Stage 2 pupils in 220 Primary Schools across Cumbria.
Since SETPOINT Cumbria started in April 2001 we have been working hard to develop strong relationships with partner organizations. We are hosted by Cumbria Education Service [the LEA] and find that this arrangement has mutual benefits. It allows SETPOINT Cumbria to keep in close contact with current developments in areas of Education such as the National Science Strategy at Key Stage 3. We are therefore more able to target our activities effectively.
SETPOINT Cumbria has particularly strong working partnerships with the Construction Industry Training Board, BAE Systems, Cumbria Engineering Network, Sellafield Sites, Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service, The Environment Agency, REACT Engineering, Technical Fibre Products, GlaxoSmithKline and Aimhigher. These partnerships are a vital part of our delivery process and the development of Science & Engineering Ambassadors.
YOUNG FORESIGHT
This progamme is funded by North West Development Agency and delivered locally by SETPOINT Cumbria. The programme is for Key Stage 3 pupils and focuses on Conceptual Design and new emerging technologies. Young Foresight offers exciting possibilities for young designers of the future.
The SETPOINT Cumbria team continue to develop new and exciting 'mobile' activities to take into Primary and Secondary Schools. These include the IEE funded Radio Project, Aimhigher funded Robolab project and the 'Jitterbugs & Launchpad' programme funded by the Sellafield Sites.
Keith Clarkson has developed 'Bright Sparks' extension activities for Key Stage 3 in the form of a series of Electricity Challenges. Pupils work in groups to complete the Challenges and within each Challenge there are sections where pupils have to explore the use of Alternative Energy sources. The pupils completing the Challenges will also be eligible for a Bronze CREST Award. Funding for this project is being provided by United Utilities and the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
